Healing Pages - When your strength is your dam

"The easiest way to make a boat go faster is to remove the weight, not add more engine."
- Alex Hormozi

Hello friends,

Most of the clients I work with share a common trait: They are incredibly good at "doing."

They are the pillars of their families, the drivers of their businesses, and the people everyone else leans on. When a problem arises, their default setting is to apply more effort and more discipline.

But there is a shadow side to this strength. For caring achievers like us, problem-solving for others can become a shield, a way to protect yourself from your own vulnerability. Over time, this constant "efforting" and controlling shows up in the body as chronic pain, fatigue, and a persistent sense of tension.

As a Kinesiologist, I often see this strength become a "dam" in the river.

When my client, John (name changed for privacy), first came to me, he was caught in this exact hustle trap. He was "holding it all together," but his body was paying the price in persistent stiffness and a sense of being perpetually "on."

John had tried it all: the workouts, the "biohacks," the specialists. But he was still approaching his body as a "problem to be fixed." In the hundreds of clients I have helped, I almost always see this approach yield more stuckness. He didn't need a more intense regimen; he needed to clear the debris that was blocking his natural flow.

After we began integrating these somatic and Qigong practices, John shared this:

“Gabriel’s holistic approach to wellness has helped transform the way I understand my body and mind.”

That "transformation of understanding" is the somatic missing link. John moved from seeing his body as a machine to be "fixed" to seeing it as a vessel to be honoured. He stopped trying to muscle through his tension and started using trauma-informed tools to unblock his nervous system.

The result wasn’t just less pain, it was more capacity to show up for the people and projects that actually matter.

We begin our 8-week journey this Monday, January 19th.

If you are tired of the "no pain, no gain" approach to your health and are ready for a clinical, depth-oriented system that respects your nervous system, I’d love to have you join us.

It is not too late to join this cohort, but we are beginning to close the container.

When you change how you understand your body, you change how you move through the world. I hope to see you there.

Let's remember together,
Gabriel

But it’s rare for anyone, even the average instructor, to point to specifics. General claims of health end up sounding either “woo-woo”, unsubstantiated or attributable to any form of exercise. To the contrary, a growing body of clinic research on Tai Chi represents a unique convergence...

The disconnection between mind and body, self and other, ancient and modern, art and science, etc. seems less like a perspective, and more the way it is. This foundation is reaffirmed by the very institutions whose results also challenge it. Most meditators focus on the mind. Physiology and psychology are...

Move Heal Awaken Newsletter Gabriel Shaw “The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear.” — Rumi Hello friends, While there is growing awareness of the effect of trauma on our health, I believe this explanation leaves out an equally important factor: our cultural stories. The “stories” I’m referring to here are the baggage that most of us grow up so entrenched in that we may hardly notice them anymore. These burdens often come from our parents, teachers and authority figures....
