[HP] What if energy isn't something you build?

"Man follows the Earth. Earth follows heaven. Heaven follows the Tao. The Tao follows what is natural."
- Tao Te Ching ch.25

Hello friends,

The fundamental orientation of Tai Chi and Taoism is toward harmony with nature.

In practical terms, we can see this through physical training methods that help participants to shed layers of tension and restore an elastic, child-like condition in the body.

The same approach can be applied to psycho-spiritual practices, too. But many teachers and styles miss the opportunity to reveal the virtues already present. Instead, they focus on developing virtues through painstaking methods of self-cultivation or spiritual cultivation.

While there is a place for discipline, top-down approaches tend to produce internal resistance that requires years of effort to overcome. You’ve likely felt this when you’ve tried to sit still in meditation. In fact, traditional meditation instructions often acknowledge this resistance as a standard hurdle.

Consider an alternative path, which we might call self-realization, or self-discovery. What if virtue is your nature?

Your body is already 50-60% water. Physically and psychologically, we are constantly changing. Flow is already that state of reality.

The mind and body are already intricately connected. 80% or more of the vagus nerve (the largest nerve in the body) is bringing information to the brain from the body.

The light of conscious awareness is already present in every moment. We just forget and lose sight of it.

And the list goes on and on.

So why do we feel compelled to cultivate what’s already here? We feel disconnected from who, and what, we are.

We forget. We get stressed. That stress causes tension. That tension breeds physical and psychological disconnection. If we don’t have practices to release the blockages, they become conditioned patterns of separation.

Our practice doesn’t need to be about “cultivating” some mysterious energy. It’s simply about learning to see where we’re blocking ourselves, so that we can uncover our true nature. A true nature that’s been there all along.

The process is simple. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

We need supportive containers, dedicated practice and experienced guidance.

That’s why I’m partnering with internationally recognized Tai Chi master, Sam Masich, to offer an immersive weekend of inner work practice.

Join us for Breath, Energy and Internal Arts on September 25-27, 2026 in Victoria.

It will be a weekend of introspection, breath and energy practices. We’ll provide expert instruction to help deepen your inner work, understand what’s blocking you, and experience the energy, heat and imaginative bodies firsthand.

What is your experience with self-cultivation versus the self-realization paths? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Let’s remember together,
Gabriel

"There is no initiation without a death."- Francis Weller Hello friends, We humans share a fundamental need. It's the need to honour major life transitions with formal rites of passage. The presence of "initiation" experiences is one of the most persistent observations across cultural history. Traditional societies have all developed mechanisms to usher individuals through existential thresholds, such as: from adolescence to adulthood assumption of high-stakes leadership navigating major...

“I describe myself as a philosophical minimalist. That is, I believe in as little as possible… Jettison all the baggage, all the new age claptrap, all the bullshit, all the spiritual bypassing. And just believe in as little as possible. But you get those things right, they are entirely sufficient. I’m putting my money on the redeeming power of love—in all its forms”- Bruce Tobin, founder of Therapsil Hello friends, I've been thinking a lot about what it takes to jettison the baggage and the...

“The greater part of the soul lies outside the body.” - Michael Sendivogius The Architecture of Initiation Hello friends, My first introduction to the formal conception of initiation was during a 5-week course with the depth psychologist Francis Weller. It was mid-covid, and it coincided with my own initiation journey, although I wouldn’t have used that word at the time. Burnout, anxiety and a lifetime of seeking something deeper had led me to a healing journey. A journey fuelled by ritual,...
